Leading Your PTA With Purpose
PTA presidents play an important role in leading their local units and creating meaningful opportunities for families and students. South Carolina PTA provides president resources, leadership guidance, and tools to help PTA leaders successfully manage their responsibilities and build strong organizations.
Every decision should come back to one question:
“How does this help every child reach their full potential?”

RESOURCES:
1
Understand the Role
The President is responsible for:
-
Leading the PTA in fulfilling its mission and goals
-
Presiding over PTA meetings
-
Working with officers and committees to accomplish PTA objectives
-
Ensuring the PTA follows its bylaws, standing rules, and policies
-
Serving as the primary connection between PTA leaders, members, and community partners
-
Encouraging participation, inclusion, and engagement

The President is a facilitator and team builder—not a one-person operation.
Review the Financial Handbook so you are aware of your responsibilities; check out our example Agenda; visit National PTA's Local Leader Kit and their THRIVE Trainings.
2
Know Your PTA Governing Documents
For example:
-
PTA Bylaws – The rules that govern how your PTA operates
-
Standing Rules – Additional procedures specific to your PTA
-
Policies and procedures from SCPTA and National PTA
3
Build a Strong Leadership Team
A successful PTA starts with a strong board. Work together with all Board Members, School administration, Parents, teachers, and community members. Delegate responsibilities, provide support, and recognize the contributions of your volunteers. The best leaders create opportunities for others to lead. A successful PTA President does not do everything alone—they build a strong team, encourage collaboration, and ensure the PTA stays focused on its mission.
4
Run Effective PTA Meetings
The President leads meetings and helps ensure PTA business is conducted properly.

Before meetings:
-
Prepare an agenda
-
Review reports and action items
-
Confirm speakers or presentations
-
Ensure members receive proper notice

During meetings:
-
Follow parliamentary procedure as outlined in PTA guidelines
-
Encourage participation
-
Keep discussions focused
-
Ensure all voices are heard
-
Guide the group toward decisions and action
5
Keep Your PTA Compliant and Organized
The President helps ensure the PTA remains in good standing.
Important responsibilities include:
-
Updating officer information in Givebacks
-
Ensuring required reports and forms are completed
-
Following bylaws and policies
-
Confirming required meetings and elections are held
-
Working with the Treasurer to ensure financial procedures are followed
6
Partner With Your School and Community
PTAs are strongest when they build relationships.
A President should:
-
Meet regularly with the school principal
-
Understand school goals and needs
-
Encourage family engagement
-
Build partnerships with community organizations
-
Ensure PTA programs support students and families

Remember: PTA is a partner in education, not a replacement for the school.
7
Create a Vision for Your PTA Year
Ask:
-
What does our school community need?
-
How can PTA support student success?
-
Are our programs inclusive and accessible?
-
How can we increase family involvement?
-
Are we creating meaningful impact?

Successful PTAs focus on quality over quantity—fewer meaningful programs can often make a greater difference.
8
Communicate With Transparency
Good communication builds trust.
Keep members informed by:
-
Sharing meeting information
-
Celebrating accomplishments
-
Explaining decisions
-
Encouraging feedback
-
Making sure families know how to get involved

-
Documenting successful programs
-
Mentoring future leaders

Encouraging new volunteers
-
Completing a thorough officer transition
